SpyFu Keyword Research Tool Review

April 23, 2018 Posted by Dev Reviews 8 Comments

spyfu review

Name: SpyFu

URL: www.spyfu.com

Price: $39, $78, $199

Grade: B

One of the most popular keyword research tools out there is SpyFu. I almost hesitate to call SpyFu a keyword research tool though, as it does far more than just perform keyword research. To help you better understand what it does and if it’s the right choice for you I have written this in-depth SpyFu review.

Before you start running ads, find out what your competition or rivals are doing with their advertising. See what’s working for them and then mimic what they are doing with your own ads. This is where SpyFu comes in, a very useful cloud-hosted SEO tool, that basically spies on your competitors. With Spyfu, you can search which keywords your competitors use, their SEO history, rankings, pay-per-click (PPC) campaigns, including which keywords have been unsuccessful for any of your competitors.

The tool crawls over 75 million domains, a substantial amount, so you can be more confident about any PPC ads you buy or campaigns you set up on Adwords. Another neat feature is that you can compile data reports and brand it with your own business logo and info, in case you are offering paid for SEO services.

SpyFu can also be used to help you work with other advertisers or businesses. With data collected, you can always reach out to an advertiser using contact information and ask if they would be interested in back-linking opportunities.

A Look at SpyFu’s Features

  • Backlink Searches & Unlimited Backlink Results:
See which backlinks are the most valuable for your domain, and get an estimation of how much traffic you are getting from each backlink.
  • Adwords History & Organic Rank History:
Do a domain search and see every place they’ve shown up on Google and which keywords were bought over the past 11 years.
  • Adwords Advisory Reports:
Based on the strength or weakness of your domain name, you can generate an ad campaign strategy, with advice about how to be more profitable.
  • Ad History & Ad Spend:
See what wording your competitors use in their ads, now and in the past. See which ads they kept running over time, so you can see which ads are more successful.
  • Keyword Searches:
Filter a list of keywords to see which ones are more relevant to your niche. See which sites get the most organic traffic, see which keywords are more expensive and which ones are used the most.
  • Custom Branded Reports:
Compile data reports for a client, export them and easily add your company logo and business information. (Not available in the Basic Plan).
  • Tutorials For All Tools:
If you’re not sure how to use a specific feature tool, there’s a library of tutorials to guide you through it, step by step, so you can take advantage of your SpyFu subscription.

Use SpyFu’s Ad History to Change How You Build a PPC Campaign

Under the Ad History tab, you can see how an ad has evolved over time for a specific competitor. This a very useful feature of Spyfu and will get the most out of your ad spend budget. Keywords should catch someones attention when combined with the right ad copy. You can see what worked best for an advertiser and what didn’t work out so well. You’ll be able to see every ad variation for that domain on every keyword ever ran.

The most “trusted” keywords are listed first. These are the keywords that have been run most consistently and most recently. If you can find an ad that has been running for 6 months, you know you have a winner!

If you want to narrow the focus of a keyword, you can use the filter. You’ll also be able to see every advertiser who has run an ad campaign using that keyword. The Ad History for a keyword shows up a list of domains that have advertised with that keyword. Being able to see an advertisers keyword choices is a testimony to what has worked for them and what hasn’t, and puts an end to any doubts you may have about actionable keywords.

Cons

  • Can be confusing for novice users.
  • Some keywords are not related, meaning some manual research is important to do.

Thank you for this great review on SpyFu Keyword Research Tool Review. I had not heard of this product before. I like that it is a “cloud hosted” SEO keyword tool. I hate downloading endless programs from companies that I have not dealt with before. I have not started my first PPC campaign yet, but I can see how using SpyFu to do background research on how keywords have performed in your niche over the past 6 months would definitely give your PPC campaign and edge and help you stay away from programs which just aren’t performing.
I was just wondering what is the #1 way that you use SpyFu? Cheers

        Hi Glenys,

I agree – it is frustrating having to download and install a million and one things so a cloud based tool is nice. SpyFu also definitely gives you insight into all facets of your online marketing campaigns, not just PPC. On that note, I would have to say my favorite use for SpyFu is the competitor research. It’s almost addicting to run competitive analysis reports on fellow sites in your niche. With those reports you can see where their best backlinks are coming from and often also get contact info for the webmaster’s of those sites. This enables you tor each out and work towards gaining a new strong backlink. With that said, if you are just getting started, these are things you really shouldn’t concern yourself with. Let your backlinks build naturally while getting started. If you start focusing on backlinks too soon you may end up getting careless and getting one or two bad backlinks and getting hit with penalties. Thanks for the comment!

This article came very handily as I myself am about to look into Spyfu for keyword tool and backlinking before I saw this.
I have heard a lot about them before until I read this which obviously gave me much insight thanks this review.

I think I will give it a shot and see how it works before going further.

My question is; does it has free trials? Or just from basic plans up?

        Hi Richard,

Great question. While SpyFu does not offer a free trial, they do have a 30 day money back guarantee. So no matter which membership level you choose, if you decide that SpyFu is not the right choice for you, you can get your money back. Thanks for the comment!

I kind of laughed when I saw the price for over a million dollars. However I’m guessing that is a joke and after reading your review — this seems like a pretty good keyword tool.

I never heard of one being able to track back links and everything. Now a days though I wonder how useful that is anyways.

Have you used jaaxy before? If so how do uo comoare this keyword tool to that?

        Hi Michael,

Where did you see the price for over a million dollars? The price list in the beginning is meant to show 3 different prices. Was that mistaken as one price? If so that’s good info for me to know if I should reformat the layout of the overview.

Being able to track backlinks is very useful once you gain more traction in your industry. It sucks to say, but there are some jealous folks out there who could sabotage your site with bad backlinks. However, if you catch it before it becomes a problem, you have little to worry about.

I love Jaaxy. Honestly if you are getting starting in affiliate marketing I would probably suggest Jaaxy over SpyFu. The tools and features Jaaxy offers are designed for affiliate marketers specifically, whereas SpyFu was designed for internet marketers as a whole.

Thanks for the comment! And do let me know about that million dollars remark and if I need to revisit my formatting.

You mentioned three different pricing options for the Spyfu Keyword tool.

I am assuming that the higher the price, the more features you will get from it.

With that being said, am I paying for the tool on a one time basis or am I paying for it on a monthly basis?

        Hi Jessie,

The features are the same but the amount changes, with one caveat. The baseline membership doesn’t allow branded reports or API access. Other than that the differences lie in the amount you can track. So for example the Basic membership allows for 5K  weekly tracked keyword rankings,  Professional allows for 15K tracked weekly keyword rankings and Team gives you 40K tracked weekly keyword rankings as well as the ability to have up to 5 logins on the account. Hope that helps. Thanks for the comment!
